Fade In:

int. study - day
It is a bright afternoon, the sun is streaming into a small study room, shelves filled with statues and video game boxes. Against the back wall is a large desk with a computer. To one side is a big, comfy looking armchair with a side table. HUMAN is at the computer; their back is to us wearing headphones. KITTY is curled up on the armchair.
Human
(Random grunting)

armchair
GHOSTIE pops into view with a flourish. She looks around, her expression brightening when she spots Kitty. She floats over and pokes Kittys head. Kitty wakes with a start, glares at Ghostie then stretches while yawning and curls back up with his back to her.

study
Ghostie’s face screws up with displeasure and scans the room. Her eyes land on a glass sitting on the side table and is struck by an idea.

side table
Ghostie tries to push the glass and is happily surprised when it moves. The noise catches Kitty’s attention making him sit up and resume glaring at her. Ghostie approaches Kitty and waves her arms suggestively at him, but he just swipes at her.
Kitty
(Hisses)
Ghostie is not impressed, her expression turns mischievous and she goes back to pushing the glass off the table. Kitty starts to panic and leaps to save the glass. He is holding the glass up with his paws when Ghostie disappears.

painting
Ghostie reappears by a large painting on the wall. She tugs up on the painting, trying to lift it off the hook. Kitty, fully panicked, leaps into view and hangs off the bottom of the painting. The painting settles back into place and Kitty now has his claws stuck in the frame.

study
ghostie
(giggling)
Ghostie floats over to the bookshelf and begins to push books onto the floor. Kitty is frantically trying to unstick himself, eventually succeeding and dropping to the floor.

bookshelf
Kitty scrambles up the bookshelf determined to catch the pesky ghost. When he reaches the top he swipes at her, only to unbalance himself and cause the bookshelf to tip over with a large crash.

study
Ghostie disappears in the blink of an eye. Kitty pokes his head up through the shelves, surrounded by books. The first thing he sees is his owner standing over him, with a disapproving look on his face, pointing towards the door.
Kitty heaves a big sigh and begins walking slowly towards the door. He pauses halfway to look back longingly at the armchair and then his owner. His owner is unmoved, so Kitty continues out the door, with a happy looking Ghostie following behind him.

Film and Animation history 1905-1915

James stuart Blackton was a journalist that interviewed Thomas Edison. Due to a comment about enjoying drawing and a portrait of Edison, Blackton changed careers, became a cameraman, director and a founder of animation. He is credited with creating the first drawn animation on film.

Emile Cohl

Was a member of The Incoherents, a group that believed in the crazy and surreal. They paved the way for surrealists and conceptual artists and were inclusive of ppl that couldnt draw. Cohl took this attitude into animation which became a precursor to modern day cartoons. He created Fantasmagorie in 1908 which is considered to be the worlds first full animated film.

Martin Thornton

Credited with creating the first colour animated film made with Kinemacolor. The special projectors required limited and eventually killed the colour film system.

Winsor Mccay

Self taught classical animator, he use realism and intricate designs. He reacts with his creation in Gertie the Dinosaur(1914).

Ladislaw Starewicz

Used embalmed insects turned into puppets, to film animation. A newspaper had reported the beetles in The Beautiful Leukanida (1910) were actually alive and trained by a russian scientist.

David Wark Griffith

Griffith used techniques from Porter, Guy, Melies and others to create around 450 films between 1908 and 1913. His contribution to film was pacing and sense of speed. Like Alice Guy, he insisted on using real actors, rehearsals and more realistic actor motions. His range of genres included gangster, westerns, comedy and romance. Known as a racist. Created Birth of a Nation in 1915, about the civil war in southern america, using a large budget for the time of $110,000. This film lasted for 2 1/2 hrs.

Only 3 hollywood stars attended his funeral, Mary Pickworth, Richard Bartlemas and Lillian Gish. It only took 5 yrs to become an industry leader. He was born and raised on a modest sized farm, despite claiming to own a plantation. He only attended school for 2-3yrs, but was an avid reader and taught himself. He spent most of his youth in Kentucky. Discovered the theater at 17 and decided to become a playwright. Spent 10yrs covering the country learning how to be an actor, and subsequently a playwright. Movies were considered a burlesque back in those days, embarrassing to be associated with. Around 1910, he started bringing wider america to the viewers. A lot of his films were shot in hollywood. Biograph was the company he worked for, when he finally began signing contracts with his real name. He left Biograph due to conflicts, and most of his "company" left with him. 1915, he released the film Birth of a Nation with the philharmonic orchestra, unheard of at that time. 2nd half of the movie involves heavy KKK scenes, portraying them as heroes in the war reigning vengeance over the "negro beasts". This movie borrow heavily from a screenplay by Dixon, with the racism toned down..

Principles of Animation 4/3

Im thinking I am going to have to bring my intuos to class because the cintiq on my computer is having the offset cursor error and the chances of it getting fixed arent that great atm. I need to finalise the 3/4 pose, I think I need to open her legs into a bit more of a semi relaxed pose, for ease of animating later. The turnaround is the major focus right now, and all going well I should have it done by the end of the week.

Research 4/3

Taking our homework from last week and commenting on it to help with retaining the information for later use. Got given tips on memory improvement and apa referencing also today, it will be good to refine what I learnt last year about this, and to get it right.

George Melies was a french professional magician, who began experimenting with motion pictures after viewing movies created by the Lumiere brothers in 1895. He was also the first to film fictional narratives. He built a studio near paris, wrote scripts and used actors to film his stories.

What new techniques did he create? He discovered stop motion, slow motion, dissolve, fade-out, superimposition and double exposure.

How did the new techniques influence future films in general? His techniques and illusions helped to inspire movie creators of the time to branch out into fiction. Many big budget films in this day and age employ special effects to create the desired end results, allowing fiction movies to portray non-realistic environments, creatures and events ie. Avatar 3D, Jurassic Park, Rampage.

From your Top Ten list of films, describe how George Melies may have been an influence.
Pirates of the Caribbean contains a set of scenes where Captain Jack Sparrow is surrounded by multiple copies of him self, using superimposition .
300 has several scenes where it uses "bullet" time, extreme slow motion.

Research 3/3

Intro lesson to the library today. The new student page really makes a difference in trying to find the library page. Much better design than last year.

Game Design still doesnt have access to blackboard yet, I must remember to ask about that again in class. Thanks to Ben for the HW piccy.
