Digital 6/6

Concept sketch to 3D model. Just need to refine the fox's face then Im happy with how its turned out. Im thinking of using mudbox to add textures and define the eyes for simplicity. Initial attempts didnt work due to some overlapping vertices/edges that I need to hunt down and merge first, but I will succeed! Challenge accepted.

Maya Rendering

Arnold render, use the empty clapperboard to render, create a physical sky and adjust intensity to improve the lighting.
Quick concept sketch of what I had in mind for my chess piece. A kind of hybrid of the cow plant from The Sims, and the Foliaath monster from modded minecraft. Basically a fox head with a plant body, little shop of horrors style.

Progress so far in Maya, just easing my way back into the controls slowly.

Drawing 14/5

First time playing with ink as a medium. Took a bit to get used to, Ive never really used watercolours either, but I imagine it would be a similar principle in regards to layering. Shading is something that I still havent got the hang of yet, too used to pencil/drawing shading that doesnt require the layering. I do like how the final picture turned out mostly. Better than I originally thought i was gonna look like, as long as u look at it from a distance lol.

Digital 11/4

The two final looks for my clock, I ended up going with the second one with the Foxglove flowers instead of the tail. After a lot of dicking around, Im semi happy with the result but its my fault for not planning out my time better.

Digital 4/4

Indesign and clocks today. If I can finish this today, thats one part of the assessment done right out the gate.

4 concept designs for for my clock. The fox definitely is the one jumping out at me, even after trying some colour on the others. However, I want to curl the fox around the clock centre more to try and accentuate the clock shape.

Digital 28/3

Using lightroom to edit photos. More of the same that I learnt last year. These photos were from last week, and I had actually edited them in class last week while waiting for everyone to return.

This last image was playing around with adjustment layers and masking to tweak the colours into the crazy side.

Digital 14/3

Using popular movie posters and identifying what composition rules they have used. Definitely tricky picking out the main colours for this exercise, but practice makes perfect.

Digital Media 21/3

All about using the camera. Same old same old. This is the third time Ive been through this training session with Chris so not much to learn, just refreshing the basics. Making me wish the weather would clear up and the Sun get busy again so I can go back out for Aurora pics at Oreti.

Digital Media 7/3

Proposal Day... blegh. I think I did ok considering my lack of sleep. Some things never change haha.

Composition.
Arranging scene elements in a pleasing manner.

3 Stages of Composition

1- Focal Element
2- Structure
3- Balance

1- Focal Element

Focal element is what the viewer is immediately drawn to in an image. This helps to keep a viewer interested, and direct them to whats important in an image. Contrast creates a focal element, be careful to not accidentally shift focus.

Natural Focal Elements
-High contrast
-Saturation
-Camera focus
-Motion
-Faces or figures

Focal Element Influencers
-Guiding lines
-Geometry
-Framing

Use leading lines as much as possible to help direct the focal element. Make sure there is only one focal element.

2 - Structure

The organisation of an image according to a set of rules.

Common Structure examples
-Rule of thirds
-Golden ratio
-Pyramid
-Symmetry
-Full Frame

Pyramid structure great for characters, single subjects. Full frame is zoomed in on a single object, or a little gap around.

3- Balance

Ensuring that the visual weight of the image is balanced.

Visual weight includes:
-Size
-High contrast
-Saturation
-Faces
-Figures

Make sure the balancing item doesnt detract from the actual focal element.

Digital media 28/2

Exploration of photoshop tools using my linework from last week. Mostly using clipping masks and layers to create the different effects. The sunset photo is one of my favourite photos that I took last year, although I wish it had been with a DSLR and not my phone so it was better quality. I really think using flowers for my theme will give me the best creativity as there is a huge range that I can choose from but the rose is a classic.

Studio Digital 21/2

Working from a photo reference is a great way to start the artistic process but you need to be wary of copyright issues. This doesn't really help improve actual drawing skills either. Next week will be filling in the colour and shading which I am looking forward to. One of my coloured pencil drawings that Im proud of was a rose, so it will be great if I can get the same result digitally.

Using the pen and vector drawing is going to take a bit to get used to, as it can be very finicky compared to a normal brush tool. Practice makes perfect right?

The pen tool really doesn't like doing anything over a 1/4 circle, so thats where the ellipse tool comes in, and after rasterising you can edit with the eraser and brush tool. I can see the potential for creating crisp linework using the pen tool after becoming accustomed to it.
