Photography 26/7

Today was the first day of testing our pinhole cameras, and the introduction to the dark room. My camera was made out of a cut down pringles can that I have painted, and added a metal pinhole to the front.

2min exposure with my camera. I think because my hole is so small, possible oval and the curvature of the paper meant that the image was not exposed on the paper properly. I will adjust the hole slightly and play around a bit more with exposure to see what results i can get, before I write this version of the camera off.

Animation 25/7

I need to start thinking about camera angles and transitions. I dont want to end up with a fully side scroll animation like last semester. I already know I want some sort of front on shot when Draco first puts his head under the water for the first time, with the scene spinning around behind him to show the little fish.

Pipeline

Script Breakdown   -->   Thumbnailing  -->  Storyboarding  -->  Animatic

Thumbnails are key images throughout the story. Each shot/scene must have a story point. 16:9 resolution. Use rule of thirds for composition.

Establishing shot, red is for movement, blue is for sketching and black will be final lines.

Animation 18/7

Week two is all about getting our story chosen, and script written. I have decided to stick with the world I created last semester, and take young Draco on a new journey.

Logline: Draco wakes up to a beautiful sunny day. He spends the morning exploring by the river, making a new friend while he is there.

                                                               Gone Fishin...?

The sun rises over a lush green valley. A river is shimmering in the background as a sleepy, curled up baby dragon comes into view. He yawns loudly, groans while he stretches, and after a moments decision making in his head, decides to go and explore the river for the first time.

Draco reaches the rivers edge and walks alongside the sparkling water, sniffing various rocks and plants as he goes. Something shiny in the water catches his attention, and so he thrusts his head under the water and blinks a few times til his eyes adjust. The shiny thing that caught his eye, is a colourful little fish swimming around the river plants. The fish sees Draco, and comes up to him blowing bubbles in front of him. Dracos eyes widen in excitement, and as he draws in a breath to try and blow bubbles himself, he inhales the water. Quickly lifting his head from the river, he coughs and sputters as he tries to clear the water out of his lungs. In the background, the little fish is laughing at him.

After a few moments to catch his breath, Draco inhales a huge lungful of air, dunks his head back under the water, and proceeds to blow a large curtain of bubbles. The poor little fish is caught up in all the bubbles and lifted into the air. Draco laughs at the little fish, and after a moment he pops the bubble, setting the little fish free.

Today was the first time I have played with storyboard, the layout and controls are basically the same as Harmony however so it feels comfortable to me. The river I used previously is very basic, and for my new story I want to make it more dynamic, and animated so I played around with the highlighting and flares. I think once I am up to the animation stage, these will create the movement that Im looking for. I need to get Storyboard at home sooner rather than later so i dont get behind timewise.

Photography 12/7

The project for this class is creating images using a pinhole camera, and print making techniques to finish them off. Using a theme of negative/positive spaces, I need to create a cityscape or landscape of invercargill in the future as i see it. So far I am a little blank on ideas, but I do like the concept of fitting a steampunk type theme in there somehow. Today we wandered around downtown taking photos for inspiration for our project. I love the looks of the old buildings around here, it creates some interesting shapes in silhouette, and patterns on the surfaces.

Professional Practices 11/7

The result of this class will be an artist webpage, and experience setting up an exhibition for the art competition. Im really looking forward to the "becoming a professional" side of things, Ive never considered myself even close and had no idea where to start so this will be a perfect addition to my knowledge. We went and observed an exhibition at the pop up gallery as well, good way to start thinking about exhibitions, layout, location etc. The different styles and subjects of the paintings were alternated almost, to give a range of types on each wall, instead of creating inclusive sections, making it more likely for the viewers to look at everything instead of seeking our their own favourite art styles. This exhibition was all about the unknown.. unknown date, unknown author, unknown title. This leaves room for the viewer to interpret  each piece without any potential bias from the name or author. A rather cool way to make the viewer interact with each piece.

Story concepts for 30 sec animation

Draco sticks head in stream and meets river creatures. Discovers new underwater world from a child perspective.

Unrequited love between cat stuck in house and wild animal - bird or racoon etc. Wild animal is unaware the entire time. Alternatively wild animal becomes aware and teases cat.

Cat stuck in a rainstorm after ignoring owners call to come inside

Puppy seeing itself for the first time in a mirror - playful or aggressive response.

Creating a new animation using Draco from my previous semester would make things a little bit easier due to the fact I already have the character drawn, and a little bit of backstory to help with his reactions etc. However this could be a good chance to create something new.

Think Simons cat style, clean lines, simple backgrounds. Use of noise to create humour and anticipation.
